Established during the 2025 General Assembly in Lisbon, the Discovery Award in Seismology recognises impactful recent discoveries in the broad field of seismology and physics of the Earth’s interior. The work should have opened up new avenues of research or provided new insights into geological, geophysical or geodynamic processes.
In occasion of each General Assembly, these discoveries are presented at a dedicated IASPEI symposium at the beginning of the conference. The Discovery Award Selection Committee will evaluate these proposals and may decide to award one winner or winning team, who will receive recognition during the IASPEI Assembly closing ceremony.
The selection committee will invite up to six nominees to present their discoveries at the next IASPEI Assembly. The title and abstract of each presentation must be submitted to the Discovery Symposium before the IASPEI or IUGG General Assembly abstract deadline.
Proponents (at least one of a team) must be able to attend the Discovery Symposium during the Assembly in person to present and discuss their discovery.
Nominations can be submitted by individuals or teams. The community can nominate individuals or teams, including the option of self-nominations.
All nominations should be sent to Prof. Dr. Barbara Romanowicz, Chair of the Discovery Award Selection Committee barbarar
