Organized by the Asian Disaster Preparedness Center (ADPC) in Bangkok, Thailand, the International Institute for Geo-Information Science and Earth Observation (ITC) Enschede, The Netherlands and The Geoinformatics Center, Asian Institute of Technology (AIT-GIC) Bangkok, Thailand.
The 1st Regional course GRSDM-1 was successfully held in Bangkok in 2007 and brought together 22 participants from 12 different countries. The GRSDM course provides an excellent opportunity for professionals and practitioners to obtain essential skills and knowledge in GIS and RS and their current application in disaster risk management. Participants will gain practical and technical knowledge on the uses of GIS and RS in disaster prevention, preparedness and emergency response. Extensive exercises and simulations will provide an insight into how GIS and RS tools are applied in these fields, and the benefits and solutions that can be presented.

2008 May 27-30, in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, U.S.A.
The Joint Assembly will be 26-30 May 2008 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida and will continue to build on the theme of ‘A Meeting of the Americas’. This theme is to promote cooperative efforts among the AGU and other scientific societies in the Americas. As such, we encourage sessions focusing on scientific topics of current interest, particularly to the Americas. The Assembly is typically a moderate-sized meeting that allows for a higher fraction of oral presentations than can typically be accommodated at the AGU Fall Meeting. The Program Committee is developing a Union-wide science program that will cover topics in all areas of geophysical sciences. Located in sunny Florida, the Joint Assembly is sure to offer exciting sessions and a relaxing atmosphere.

The theme of the meeting is Dynamics in Earth Systems. All researchers using quantitative methods to study evolving Earth systems are invited. Studies that integrate field observations, laboratory experiments and theoretical models are especially welcome. Particular focus will be given to physical problems where new quantitative theories offer the possibility of significant progress in our understanding of environmental processes. These problems include fracture, ranging from ice sheets to earthquakes; geophysical fluid dynamics, ranging from internal and surface flows to oceanic and atmospheric dynamics; and physical aspects of the Earth’s biological, chemical, and climatic evolution.

EIL-06 Seismic anisotropy and rheology of the crust and mantle
Convenors: Jaroslava Plomerova, Martha Savage, Thorsten Becker, Vadim Levin
Relative motion of rock masses, both past and ongoing, are at the heart of our understanding of the way our planet behaves. One of the few indicators of rock deformation caused by large-scale motions deep within the Earth is the directional dependence (anisotropy) of seismic wave speed. Many modern studies of the Earth's structure address the issues of where seismic anisotropy is seen, what are the parameters of directional dependence, and what that means in terms of Earth's interior dynamics. As our ability to resolve anisotropic structure and to simulate the processes of rock deformation in computer models are rapidly improving, the study of seismic anisotropy and it's implications is evolving, becoming progressively more quantitative. At the same time, an improved understanding of anisotropic texture-formation mechanisms for different conditions makes interpretation of seismic anisotropy indicators more challenging. This section seeks contributions on the state of the art in resolving details of seismic anisotropy at depth; predicting likely effects of anisotropy on seismological observables; and comprehensive interpretations of seismic anisotropy in terms of past and present deformation at depth.

2008 September 22-24, in Florence, Italy
Knowledge of geological processes requires a multiscale and multidisciplinary approach combining observations, theory and interpretation. In this context, geological modelling (both analogue and numerical) has become a strategic tool to link direct geological observations with interpretations, and to improve our understanding of the 4D evolution of geological structures.
The GeoMod2008 represents a follow-up of the two successful geological modelling meetings held in Milan (RealMod2002) and Lucerne (GeoMod2004).
The conference will offer the opportunity to present and discuss the latest research results, and aims to bring together researchers from universities and industries who deal with analogue and/or numerical modelling. Particularly welcome are contributions entailing a strong interaction between modelling results and geological data from real-world case studies. The main topics of the conference will include: Rheology and Tectonics, Mountain Building and Thrust Systems, Subduction Zones, Lithospheric Extension, Basins and Sedimentary Budget, Surface Processes.
The meeting is included among the events related to the International Year of Planet Earth (Italian Commission).

2008 September 22-24, in Zadar, Croatia
The Conference is jointly organised by EARSeL, the Scientific Council for Remote Sensing-Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts, University of Zadar and GEOSAT Ltd., Zagreb.
The subject "Disaster Management and Emergency Response" is a high-priority topic in the Mediterranean region. Risk reduction using remote sensing techniques may be very helpful in various applications. Identification of relevant space-based and airborne information for Disaster Management Support and Emergency Response is a major priority issue.
The Conference is expected to provide an international forum which will bring together experts from different remote sensing and GIS branches as well as experts from disaster management to present and discuss their
results, and to exchange their experiences and expertise in Disaster Risk Reduction, using new technologies, development and applications.
The Conference will cover several stages in risk management, such as knowledge, prevention, warning, management of emergency situations, post-analysis of crisis, environmental rehabilitation, etc.
