ICESA, The International Commission for the Earth Sciences in Africa, is a joint commission of ILP (International Lithosphere Programme) and IASPEI (International Association of Seismology and Physics of the Earth Interior). ILP and IASPEI are two scientific bodies of the International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS) and International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics (IUGG). These are therefore the two main sponsors of ICESA. The annual sponsorship of both organizations is however small, i.e. USD 10, 000 per year. It represents seed money and African institutions are supposed to be the main sponsors of ICESA. The current ICESA Council includes the following persons:
This council was appointed a year ago and will be in charge of ICESA up to 2004.
Currently, ICESA activities are centred on a single core project which is to produce a book on the Geology of the African Plate, covering Africa and the Middle-East. The book project is currently sponsored by ILP and IASPEI but we expect more sponsors, e.g. UNESCO, Mining Companies, any governmental and non-governmental body in the future. A critical stage of this project will be the organization of the INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON GEOLOGY AND MINERAL RESOURCES OF AFRICA: EARLY 21st CENTURY REVIEW.
The ICESA Council is appealing to all African leaders in various areas for a sponsorship of this international conference, more particularly the intention of the ICESA Council is to have every African country represented by leading experts at this forum in order to: (1) properly review the current knowledge on African Geology and Mineral Resources and; (2) to evaluate the way forward in developing an inter-African cooperation in the exploration, exploitation and beneficiation of mineral resources for a sustainable development of the African continent. The sponsorship requested by ICESA Council is for supporting the participation of leading African experts to this forum.
